Vote for Joomla!

E-mail

It's time to vote for Joomla! in the annual Packt Publishing CMS Awards.

There are two places to vote:

We love saying that Joomla! is an award-wining CMS, and I'm sure lots of you do to, so let's get the vote out.

Also, this year you can vote on extensions and templates. We had to nominate five of each, and it was really hard because of all the great work that is out there. If you read this blog you know I asked for self-nominations back in August. It is absolutely incredible how much great work is out there.  In thinking about these we tried to balance what we know about popularity, creativity and overall usefulness for the specific purposes an extension or template was designed for. Good luck to all the finalists!

Invest Early in Your Website to Save Money

E-mail
Ten years ago, websites were largely brochure-ware and widely considered disposable. It was not uncommon for a company to roll out a new website annually. Eliminating waste is a popular topic these days, and many companies are employing strategies to get the most out of their online budgets. Today, it is not uncommon for a website [...]

Boost Your Search Engine Rankings, Traffic, Customers, and Sales With Contests!

E-mail
Every time I launch a new website I try to come up with an overall traffic strategy, not just an SEO strategy. Why? Because traffic is where the money is! Most times, an SEO strategy will take 3-6 months to start seeing rankings and start building a considerable amount of traffic… The truth is I [...]

Joomla! Developer Conference

E-mail

Third party developers are vital to the success of Joomla!.  To be effective developing extensions you need up to date information about developments in the Joomla! core and how to work effectively and using best practices when extending it. With this in mind, the Joomla! Project is tentatively planning a conference for third party developers on Saturday and Sunday December 5 and 6 in New York City.  The conference will include training targeted to experienced developers, information about Joomla! 1.6 and opportunities for networking with other developers and core developers. The conference will be of interest to extension developers, custom developers, and staff developers. We need to know how many people are likely to attend.

Long Tail Reputation Management. Wait…What?

E-mail
If you type in your company’s name and bad press and/or content show up in the SERP’s, you need reputation management. That’s pretty much an industry standard. Rep management practices have become pretty standard too: get lots of good content out there to basically force out the bad press. See Nelson’s latest post on black [...]

Please Help Test Version 1.5.15

E-mail

On August 5, we asked community members (that's you!) to help test proposed fixes to allow Joomla! to work correctly using PHP version 5.3. The response was very good. Since then, we have identified some more places that needed to be fixed, and we have also made a number of fixes to the TinyMCE editor.

For these reasons, we have created a new test release and are again asking the community to help us make sure this fixes what we think it does and doesn't create any new problems.

Ideally, we would like to get help from three groups of users: (1) those who use PHP 5.3; (2) those who do NOT use PHP 5.3 (to make sure we didn't break anything); and (3) those who use TinyMCE.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This download is only for testing should NOT be used in any type of production environment. It should only be used to test that it fixes any issues with PHP 5.3.0 and TinyMCE and doesn't create any new problems.

The download is available here: http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsrelease/11122/44166/Joomla_1.5.15-Test-Full_Package.zip. Install it like you would a "real" Joomla! version.

If you are testing TinyMCE, here is a link to the issues that were fixed: http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/trackeritem/17438/44165/TinyMCETestPlan.pdf.

If you find problems related to the PHP 5.3 fixes, please report them in the tracker here: http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/tracker/?action=TrackerItemEdit&tracker_item_id=18008. If you find TinyMCE problems, please report them in the tracker here: http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/tracker/?action=TrackerItemEdit&tracker_item_id=17438.

If you are able to test this and it works correctly, please leave a comment either in the tracker or below.

And thanks for helping to make Joomla! as bug-free as possible!

Website Beauty Tips

Among the perfect Barbie dolls and pop icons that litter the walls of every adolescent male, you will never see a pockmarked crone or even a hot model with something in her teeth. Professionals airbrush every picture beyond perfection; heaven forbid you ever see cellulite or dark shadows under bloodshot eyes! Television producers have capitalized on [...]

Jump Into the Whitewater for Your Clients

E-mail
A few of us stood in the shade, watching the guides from Holiday Expeditions put the boats onto the trailer. The two-day river rafting trip was over, and as we were left contemplating it in the 100-degree heat, one impression stuck with me: Until you actually jump into the Colorado River and float through its raging [...]

Multilingual Girl Power

E-mail

Its often said there is a lack of women contributing and participating at higher level in open source projects.
Fortunately we do see a tendency of this changing to the better within the joomla! project

Sure, the male:female contributor ratio still weighs towards the male side, but the fact that we more and more often see women taking on the leading roles within ours teams is a good indicator of a more balanced ratio in the future.

So to get to the real topic of this post, we are pleased to add two new members to the Translation Coordination Team.
Stefania from the Italian Translation Team
Marijke from the Dutch Translation Team.

These two hardworking women accepted to join in and help managing all the tasks of the Translation Coordination related to connecting and communicating with the Translation Teams and tasks within the Production and Community WGs.

At the same time we would like acknowledge the great effort done by Rune, Pete and Michael, who all are now taking a step back and focussing at other local translation tasks. Thanks guys.

To wrap up this women focussed post, we can add that there has been a male/female change of local coordinator of the Serbian Translation Team. Marko done a long and great effort in creating a solid platform for the local Serbian Community, and can with good conscience hand over the responsibility of being Serbian Translation Coordinator to Svetlana.

Welcome to the three of you!
